SUBJECT: SNN 4/26, paddle raise ongoing, elections coming up, and more!

Issue 32, April 26, 2026
ANNUAL GALA NEWS

Huge thanks to everyone who joined us at the Ballroom on 74th last night for the Fiorello Fiesta, an amazing and tasty night filled with Filipino food and dancing. Check out some of the photos of the fun below!

Despite the miserable weather the room was full and lots of money was raised. We are still totalling up the numbers, but we have decided to keep our paddle raise going virtually in the hopes that we can raise more money to support LaGuardia's clubs. We need to raise $80,000 to cover the costs of advisors for the clubs along with some additional funding.

Make your contribution HERE!

Find more photos of the event HERE, and huge thanks to parent Bill Sherman for capturing the awesome evening.

Important calendar updates

The May PA meeting with elections was moved up to May 12, while the May SLT meeting was moved to May 20. Be sure to adjust your calendars!

ACADEMIC FORUM

Freshman and sophomore year may feel early to think about college, but they’re actually the most strategic time to build momentum. At LaGuardia, artistic excellence is a given—what distinguishes applicants is a second “spike” that shows sustained curiosity and commitment beyond their art.

This is the time to engage in extracurriculars with intention. Depth matters: long-term involvement in areas like scientific research, business or entrepreneurship, writing and journalism, debate, robotics, environmental work, or community leadership carries more weight than short-term participation. Entering competitions can further demonstrate initiative—examples include science fairs, math competitions, Model UN conferences, business pitch challenges, coding competitions, and national writing or journalism awards.

Summer is especially valuable. Rather than defaulting to passive activities, students can use this time to take a college course, pursue an internship or job, volunteer in a sustained way, attend an academic program, or develop an independent project such as launching a small business, building an app, conducting research, or publishing a blog or journal.

Light, consistent test prep can begin now to reduce junior-year pressure, while early college visits—virtual or in-person—help students understand academic fit and campus culture.

Front-loading these efforts isn’t about adding pressure; it’s about creating options. Starting early allows students to explore, refine their interests, and present a more cohesive, authentic story—one that extends meaningfully beyond their artistic talent.

“My responsibility as an artist is to reflect the times, and while it's my passion, I don’t take it for granted that my artistry holds meaning for more people than just myself.”

- Joy Sunday

NOISES OFF NEEDS YOU (TWICE)

Two ways to be part of Noises Off. And yes, you can do both. We believe in you.

ONE: Get your tickets HERE before they’re all gone. Seriously. There are merely dozens of seats left per performance. But we like to sell them all out. That’s how we roll.

TWO: Volunteer in the lobby by signing up HERE. Hopefully not during the performance you just bought tickets to go see. I mean, we encourage double duty… just try to spread it out if you can.

Buying a seat is great. Filling a volunteer slot is heroic. Doing both probably gets you into the PODS hall of fame, which doesn't exist yet but really should.

BRAZEN, AGAIN

Last time we got (to) Brazen, it was fun! Let’s do it again. You don’t have to be brazen to go there. And by go there, we mean that literally… not the other meaning of go there… as in let’s not go there, okay? But as in have you ever been to that great bar? No? We should totally go there. Anyway, let’s get social at Brazen. Which is a tavern as much as it is an adjective or a verb.

Thursday, May 7 @ 7:00pm @ Brazen Tavern @ 356 West 44th Street.

MAY 18: MEETING. ALSO, DEMOCRACY.

Mark your calendars: our next PODS meeting is Monday, May 18 @ 7:00pm. We'll also vote on open board positions, meaning this is the meeting where you decide who runs the show next year. Or, even better, raise your hand to BE one of the people running the show next year. Several spots are opening up and we genuinely need you. See them HERE. Pick one you love. Then come on May 18 and grab the role of your dreams.

ONE LAST CURTAIN CALL

Join us for "The Final Bow: For the Drama Studio", the LaGuardia HS Drama Class of 2026 takes the stage one final time at the iconic Players Theatre in Greenwich Village. All funds raised go directly to the Drama Studio. Open exclusively to the Class of 2026 Drama Seniors. Monday, June 8 at 7:00pm. Sign-up deadline: May 11. Only 30 slots available. Sign up HERE. Ticket info coming soon.

DANCE GRADUATION CONCERT

The Dance Graduation Concert is 4 weeks away -- May 29, 30 and 31 -- and we could not be more excited! Here's what we need from you:

  • Buy tickets and share out ticket information with people in your network. Let's fill that theater! Tickets went on sale for senior families on April 25 and will be available broadly from the LaG Box Office beginning May 1.
  • Please consider sponsoring a piece. Presenting a concert of this caliber comes with real costs, and many pieces are still missing sponsorships with time running out. If the full investment is not possible, we are absolutely open to families co-sponsoring a piece together. We also encourage you to share this with friends, family, and businesses who might want to support our young artists.

9th grade families: This will be your children in three short years! Every penny donated helps us ensure this concert is funded adequately this year, and in the years to follow.

10th and 11th grade families: Your dancers are inching closer to this exciting moment. Ask them what piece they are most excited to watch! And consider supporting that piece as a sponsor.

12th grade families: This is it! Your last chance to support and watch your children dance at LaGuardia. Pretty please, if you are able to sponsor, or co-sponsor a piece, email us and let us know.

With gratitude,

Katie & Barbette
