SUBJECT: SNN - 6/18 - THAT'S A WRAP (almost)

Issue 40, June 18, 2023
Happy Father's Day!

Today we celebrate everyone who loves and supports our children each and every day!

Americans celebrate Juneteenth to recognize the day in 1865 when  the last enslaved people in the country learned they were free. For generations, Black Americans have recognized the end of the darkest chapter in our country's history with parades, street festivals, performances and cookouts. But it was only in 2021 that the President signed a bill passed by Congress declaring June 19th as a federal holiday.

Happy Juneteenth!

SPECIAL PA MEETING THIS TUESDAY 6/20

ONE AGENDA ITEM:  Vote To Approve New Bylaws

Tuesday, Jun 20, 2023 06:00 PM

Join Zoom Meeting
Meeting ID: 811 8987 1332
Passcode: 171387

We will vote on the following that was presented to the community at our June 14 General PA Meeting.

1. Create a new position on the PA Executive Board. The Vice President, Special Education will be the parent or guardian of a student with a disability (IEP or 504) and be responsible for helping the LaGuardia community to better understand the special education services entitled to students and help to advocate for them.

2. Allow us the option to elect Class Representatives in the spring. The current bylaws require the Class Representatives to be elected in the fall. The Freshman Class Representative will continue to be elected at the first PA meeting in the fall.

UPDATED Bylaws can be found HERE.

A LETTER FROM PA PRESIDENT MC SHANE

Dear LaGuardia Families:

The LaGuardia Parents Association unexpectedly came into my life last year. The election was a landslide. I ran unopposed.  Nobody else wanted the job and I wasn’t sure I did either.  But one year later, I can honestly say it’s been the most deeply meaningful and personally rewarding experience I could have ever imagined.

A LETTER FORM AUCTION & BENEFIT CHAIR - CAROLINE ANDOSCIA

The LaGuardia 2023 Auction and Benefit is officially over and we wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who  participated. It would not have been possible without combined efforts of our amazing LaGuardia community.  It was a truly a collaborative effort which grossed over 85K for the PA.

Everyone involved from the donors to the winners to all of the supporters contributed the success of the benefit and auction.

The event at Bottino was a wonderful celebration of the LaGuardia community.  The LaG staff only cocktail reception was attended by over 50 people who mixed and mingled and with PA President Jamie McShane and the Executive Board members of the PA. We were thrilled that many stayed for the benefit also which was attended by almost 300.

Among the attendees was the Superintendent of Manhattan High Schools Gary Beidleman and Gail Brewer, NY City Council 6th District Representative – both LaGuardia supporters.

Thank you again to everyone for your enthusiasm, your support and your continued efforts to support the PA and all the work we do.

Best,

Caroline Andoscia

Vice President, Fundraising
