As parents, spring term is our most vital window to support our students’ long-term goals while managing the "end-of-year" burnout. Here is a streamlined focus for each grade level:
Freshmen: Foundation & Habits
Focus on the GPA baseline. Ensure your student is finishing strong in core subjects. Encourage them to choose one or two extracurriculars they genuinely enjoy to develop deep engagement rather than a long list of "filler" clubs.
Sophomores: The Pivot
It’s time to transition from participant to contributor. Encourage your student to seek leadership roles or specialized projects for next year. Use this spring to take the PSAT to identify their testing strengths. Plan and begin some college visits.
Juniors: The High-Stakes Peak
This is the most critical semester for transcripts. Help your student finalize their "First Cut" college list (Safety, Target, and Reach). Remind them to prepare a brag sheet ask two teachers for letters of recommendation before summer break.
Seniors: Logistics & Transition
With admissions decisions arriving, focus on comparing financial aid packages (look at the "Net Price," not just the sticker price). Ensure they maintain their grades to avoid rescinded offers, and start practicing "adulting" skills like basic budgeting and laundry.
For All Grades:
Spring is the ideal time to secure summer plans. Whether it’s a part-time job, volunteering, or a passion project, consistency matters more than prestige.
