SUBJECT: SNN 5/26, PA/SLT elections TOMORROW, Tuesday, May 27th

Issue 36, May 26, 2025

Dear LaGuardia Parent/Guardian Community,

We would like to take a moment to clarify the relationship between the Parents Association and the various WhatsApp chats that have been created by families in our school community.

These WhatsApp groups are privately formed and operated by individual parents or guardians. They are not run, managed, or monitored by the Parents Association, the school, or the Department of Education (DOE). As such, the views and opinions shared within these chats reflect those of the participants only, and do not represent the official policies or positions of the Parents Association, the school, or the DOE.

While these chats can often serve as a helpful space for connection and support, it’s important to remember that they are not official channels of school communication. For accurate and up-to-date information, we encourage families to rely on the school’s direct communications and official Parents Association updates.

We also encourage all participants in these voluntary groups to foster respectful dialogue and uphold a spirit of community. If disagreements arise, we trust that those involved will work together in a constructive and thoughtful manner to resolve issues and follow agreed upon community standards.

Warms Regards,

2024-2025 LaGuardia Parents Association Executive Board

PA and SLT Elections Are TOMORROW!

How to vote in the PA Spring Elections:

In order to participate in PA elections that are held via zoom, upon entering the meeting everyone must rename themselves with the last four digits of their students OSIS number.

•Your student’s OSIS number is a nine digit number that every student in a NYC public school has

•Your student’s school ID card has the OSIS number on it

•You can also find it on your student’s transcript, or report card

•You can find find it by signing into your NYC Schools Account at https://www.schoolsaccount.nyc/

To make the process quicker, please find this number before you log into the meeting. If you can’t find it, we will be opening the zoom call at 6:00pm and Dr. Stricklin and Jerrianna will be able to help you. Please note that we have to start the meeting at 6:30pm. If you come late, that’s ok, but if we are in the middle of electing a position, you will have to stay in the waiting room until we complete electing that one position. If you are in the meeting and have not renamed yourself, you will be sent to a breakout room to get assistance, but we have to continue with the elections. We will have slides to show you how to rename yourself if you need help. If there are two parents/guardians who will be at the meeting, you will rename yourselves with the same 4 digits but differentiate yourselves by using A & B (example: xxxxA & xxxxB). Each parent/guardian has one vote.

LAST CHANCE AUCTION ITEMS

We are running a last chance sale on some terrific items that were not bid on. There were so many items to choose from, you may have missed these gems. Check them out!

Your contribution will directly enhance the learning environment for hundreds of students, helping them explore, discover, and thrive. As an extra incentive, anyone who donates a $100 or more will be automatically entered into our Fund-A-Cause raffle for a chance to win West Side Story (All School Musical) tickets for next year. We have two sets of 2 tickets - nice seats. We also will be raffling off a $200 gift certificate to the Brooklyn Chop House (253 West 47th Street).

Again, here is a recording of the zoom meeting held with Academic Approach on SAT/ACT TEST PREP. Be aware that more colleges are requiring these tests again! But according to the experts at Academic Approach, this is also a highly favorable time to be a test-taking student as the tests are much more “student-friendly” now,  and there is more time in which to take them in a relaxing manner.

Prom

Wednesday, June 18, 2025

City Winery - Pier 57, 25 11th Avenue (Near 15th Street)

7pm-11pm

  • Cost: $225 per person; Prom Contract & Payment is made through the school's website. (Scans of Prom Contract(s) and non-LaGuardia guest ID must be uploaded at time of payment.)
  • Prom is a formal, all-inclusive Dinner/Dance.
  • No person shall be admitted after 9:00 PM.
  • There is no readmission once a person leaves.
  • Students are responsible for their own transportation.
  • Smoking is not permitted at the facility.
  • The student and the guest must enter together.
  • All ticket holders must show picture ID before entering the venue
  • There are no refunds.
  • Dr. Stricklin-Witherspoon must approve, in advance, any change in guest.
  • There are no school-sponsored post-prom events.

Some helpful information:

  • Beginning May 1, Seniors may be able to pick up copies of the Prom Contract/Permission Slip from outside the Deans Office, Room 229. Pick up one copy per attendee.
  • Signed Contracts must be uploaded at the time of payment.
  • All students must have a Prom Contract, even if the person is 18 years old or older. (This is for emergency contact information.)
  • Payment is made through the school website (STUDENT section).
  • Non-LaGuardia students must have a picture of an ID Card uploaded at time of purchase. (School or state ID are acceptable.)
  • Seniors with Prom questions should go to Room 261 to speak with Dr. Stricklin. This is the fastest -- and preferred -- way to receive an answer.
  • Seniors requesting a reduction in ticket price (financial assistance) will NOT receive information until June 1 at the earliest.

Financial Aid

Senior Dues are required of all Seniors, and the Parents Association graciously provides financial aid to assist families who cannot afford the expense. Prom, however, is an optional activity; therefore, there are no funds set aside for Prom financial aid.

Whatever funds the school can cobble together each year for financial aid, here is how it is distributed: The amount is divided by the number of recipients.

For example, if $100 is available to distribute and 1 Senior requests it, then $100 is taken off the ticket price. (The Senior knows the reduced price and can decide if they can afford the ticket.) If $100 is available to distribute and 10 Seniors requests it, then $10 is taken off the ticket price. (The 10 Seniors know the reduced price and can decide whether they can afford the tickets.) It is doubtful that the entire ticket price is covered.

The financial aid is meant for the Senior's ticket for those who cannot afford to attend; it is not meant so you can afford to pay for a date, buy a nicer dress, go in on a limo, etc.

Spring Semi-Annual Art Show

This Friday, May 30th, 4:00pm-7:00pm

LaG Visiting Artist Program

In early May, the LaG Visiting Artist program welcomed artist, illustrator, and designer Caitlin Keegan. Cailtin shared a beautiful slideshow with students that highlighted her incredible artwork and projects. Caitlin talked about how her artwork as developed from high school to now, what it was like to study graphic design and illustration in college, building a professional portfolio and website, how she blends traditional artmaking with digital tools, working as a staff designer at Nickelodeon Magazine and Sesame Street Workshop, venturing out on her own as a freelance designer and illustrator, the collaborative aspects of design and illustration work, and a recent public art project in Times Square. Caitlin also shared printed examples of her work with students including books, posters, and tarot card sets.

FROM OUR LIBRARIAN

Anna Konovalov accepted her award at the Ezra Jack Keats Bookmaking Competition Ceremony at the Brooklyn Public Library main branch, Grand Army Plaza last Friday, May 16. She was the citywide winner for high schools. All city winners, borough winners, and honorable mentions were honored. Anna's work is on display in the children's section at Grand Army Plaza through the end of May.

Author Kelsey James, historical suspense novelist, visited the library on Wednesday 5/21 for a Q and A with members of the LaGuardia community. She talked about her road to becoming a published author, balancing her day job with writing, getting inspired by creepy places, finding your trusted readers, and more. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and Kelsey brought books which lucky attendees took home. Thanks to Mr. Lonegan (husband of the author) and the school for making this event possible!
