Thank you for joining us at our November 20th general meeting, which was open to all studios, where we welcomed five special guests to discuss their summer 2024 programs with our school community.

I hope you all enjoyed the four day weekend with friends and family.  I look forward to seeing you at our fall/winter concert series in December. 

Below are some important reminders for Seniors. Please review.


Attention Seniors:

As the school year progresses we look forward to the 2024 Music Commencement Assessment leading to the Chancellor's Diploma Endorsement in Music. We are pleased to share preliminary details below regarding the 2024 Music Commencement Assessment. Instrumental and Vocal Studio seniors prepare to graduate with a Chancellor's Diploma Endorsement in Music and must successfully complete ALL three components of the 2024 Music Commencement Assessment. Participating in the Music Commencement Assessment is a LaGuardia requirement.

The 2024 Music Commencement Assessment consists of three mandatory sections:

  • The 2024 written exam (Multiple Choice, Short Answer and Rehearsal Critique & Reccomendations) will be administered at 12pm at LaGuardia on January 23, 2024
  • The NYSSMA Solo Adjudication will occur March 22-23 (live, in-person performance of your Jury piece at a NYSSMA off-site festival)
  • The Reflective Essay will be due on March 15 (submission procedure will be included in a future letter)

Next Steps:

1.  IMPORTANT - Please read the directions and fill out the below form by Monday, November 27, 2023


2.  Review the 2024 Music Commencement Exam Handbook

  • Pages 11-16 describes each section of the written assessment (January 23), how it is scored, what topics are covered in the written section, and what is expected from you for the Rehearsal Critique section.
  •  Pages 20, 22-24 describes the reflective essay requirements. Please note that we will submit documentation for past in-school performances.

ArtsBridge Summer Screen Acting

We are thrilled to announce our newest program: ArtsBridge Summer Screen Acting! Led by Chapman University faculty John Benitz, students in this 4-day add-on program will discover a whole new world of acting for the screen. Through a series of exercises and hands-on experience, students will build foundational screen acting skills. The program will culminate in the filming and screening of partnered scenes, allowing students to experience the entire process from rehearsal to professionally edited work.

NEW YORK YOUTH SYMPHONY JAZZ CONCERT

Sunday Night Jazz Vibes in Brooklyn

Director Michael Thomas will lead the NYYS Jazz Band in his inaugural season as director at the Shapeshifter Lab for the first time on Sunday, December 10th, at 5:30PM! The band will be showcasing the legacy of Thad Jones; from his early days with the Count Basie Orchestra, to his work as a co-founder and leader of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. This concert will feature works from Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Thad Jones, as well as NYYS First Music Commission from Ben Beckman titled Dream Logic.

MANHATTAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC PRECOLLEGE JAZZ PROGRAM

The MSM Precollege Jazz Program has a unique and comprehensive curriculum, including weekly private lessons, jazz-specific classes in ear training and music theory, ensembles, and multiple performance opportunities each semester. Manhattan School of Music's Precollege jazz Arts program is an intensive and enriching environment for serious jazz students. Students work closely with a distinguished faculty of active performing artists in a Saturday program at the Manhattan School of Music in the Morningside Heights neighborhood. 

MSM Precollege will be holding mid-year auditions for the Jazz Arts program, a unique and intensive Saturday program for intermediate to advanced middle and high school students.

Auditions will be held at the Manhattan School of Music on Saturday, December 2nd, with an enrollment date of January 20, 2024, for accepted students. Financial aid is available.

The audition is open to students on the following instruments: Trombone, Saxophone, Trumpet, Double Bass

*Additional jazz instruments (piano, drums, clarinet, violin) are invited to audition in May for fall 2024 enrollment.*

THE B-SIDE AT CARNEGIE HALL

The B-Side is a program for young people (ages 14-22) that provides an entry-level look at different career opportunities in the music industry. Whether participants are aspiring artists or future music-industry leaders, this program will provide essential industry related skills, and connections with performing artists, music industry executives, accomplished producers, songwriters, and more. You do not need to be a musician to apply. The B-Side is open to any young person who is interested in learning about the music industry. Apply by January 4, 2024


MET ORCHESTRA MASTER CLASSES 2023-24

Since its founding in 1883, the MET Orchestra's performances have encompassed not only the entire opera's repertoire, but symphonic and chamber programs at Carnegie Hall, international tours, and countless musician activities outside of the Metropolitan Opera House. Lessonface is proud to be hosting online masterclasses and more activities with Met Orchestra musicians. Now accepting applications and enrollments for masterclasses for 2023-2024 for Trombone and Flute - free for performers and viewers.

NYO-USA

Each summer, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute (WMI) brings together the brightest young players from across the country to form the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA), a free program for all participants. Following a comprehensive audition process and a multi-week training residency with leading professional orchestra musicians, these remarkable teenagers embark on a tour to some of the great music capitals of the world while serving as dynamic music ambassadors.
