May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month – an annual celebration that honors the many contributions and accomplishments of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Asian/Pacific is a broad term that encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands.

The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

In June of 1977, U.S. Representatives Frank Horton of New York and Norman Mineta of California introduced a resolution to establish Asian Pacific Heritage Week, to be celebrated each year at the beginning of May. Hawaiian senators Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga introduced similar legislation in the Senate. The following year, President Jimmy Carter signed into law a joint resolution to establish the annual event, and the first celebration took place in May of 1979. In 1992, Congress passed Public Law 102-450, which annually designated May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month.
