SUBJECT: Music Monday 11.14.22

November 14, 2022
Message from the Reps

Thank you to everyone who attended our first in-person Music Studio meeting!

It was a wonderful opportunity to meet so many new families with more than 60 people in attendance.

Special thanks to the talented instrumental and vocal students who prepared a few selections for the attendees: Jazz Vocal Club members Olivia Kunz, president and Phebe Barnett, co-president along with junior Jazz Orchestra students Bix Cole, on piano and Tristan Waife, on upright bass.

Many thanks to our Music AP Ben Schott, who led an informative Q&A with parents. See our recap below with a brief synopsis of what was discussed.

The Jazz Vocal Club is still happily accepting new members!

Is your student interested in joining an after-school music club?  Click here to view all current after-school music clubs.

Is there a music club that your student is interested in that isn’t listed here? Perhaps they’d like to start one!

Students are encouraged to start clubs that they are interested in and LaG will try to find a faculty member to oversee the club.  All clubs are run by students, but overseen by faculty for safety.

First In-Person Meeting Recap

Music AP Ben Schott was on hand to have a Q&A with families. Here's a brief synopsis of what was discussed:

  • Practice rooms are available on a first come first served basis. There are 7-8 practice rooms located in the basement, open to both Instrumental & Vocal students throughout the day. Room 261 is also available for larger groups. Currently, there are no practice rooms available after 9th period due to limited staff availability.
  • Vocalist instrumental classes are only available to Juniors and Seniors.
  • If a student has or sees an instrument that needs repair, they should notify their music teacher immediately.
  • The recording studio is available during 1st & 5th periods for junior and senior students taking a Music Tech class.
  • Music academic classes (Music Theory, Site Singing, Music History) are not offered 10th period and will continue to alternate with PE classes.
  • AP Ben Schott is working on outside partnerships as well as masterclasses that will open additional opportunities for the students; more details to come.
  • Donations are essential to support our Music Studio programs, accompanists for students, and productions like the Operetta. If every Music Studio family was able to donate $100 then we would be able to meet our goal.  Remember, any contribution (greater or smaller than $100) is welcome and appreciated!!
Blurb from Ben

Hello Music Studio families,

It was a great pleasure meeting so many of you at the first in-person meeting of the Music Studio board. We had a lot of new freshman families and it was my pleasure to answer so many of their questions.

LaGuardia can become insular because we have everything we need here like musicians, teachers, and a built-in audience. However, our students need to collaborate with others in the world around them and we're trying to bring in a lot of outside partners. We have had the Marine Band,  several NYC Opera singers, and a Met Opera singer doing masterclasses. Very soon I will be sharing some exciting news about some of the partnerships we are working on, so stay tuned.

Remember - if you ever have any questions, please feel free to email me directly at bschott@schools.nyc.gov

Best,

Ben

Show your Appreciation

Welcome to the 2022-23 school year!

As many of you know, contributions to the Music Studio help pay for a variety of events - the senior class celebration and Accepted Students Open House - as well as the accompanist for chorus classes, additional live-streaming of Music performances, and other concert expenses. If families contributed $100 (or more!!) for every student, we could help the Music Studio pay for so many of these expenses.  Since LaGuardia is a 501(c)(3) organization, your donation is tax-deductible.

You can make a one-time donation or set up a recurring monthly donation - whichever works better for you - to the Music Studio (and the PA) through PayPal. To do so, click the Direct Donation link below or follow these instructions:

Log into your MTK account, click on Ways to Give under the Donate & Volunteer drop-down menu, then on the underlined red link Donate to a specific studio (2 places on the page allow you to do that). The PayPal page that appears is auto-filled to make a donation to the General PA, but you can designate the Music Studio by clicking on the drop-down menu. Below that box is the option to make your donation a monthly-recurring one. Or, by leaving that box unchecked, the donation will be a one-time donation.

You can select any amount you like to donate. Contributions are very much needed, and all are gratefully received!

Click Direct Donation to give to the LaGuardia PA, but remember to click down on the menu and select MUSIC STUDIO!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Volunteering is a great way to meet people and learn more about Music Studio affairs. Become a volunteer today to support our students and staff all year long, not just at performances. Please make sure you have filled out your volunteer questionnaire on your Membership Toolkit profile.
