October 24, 2022
Message from the Reps

Happy Diwali to all who celebrate! Diwali, one of the most important festivals in India, is the five-day Festival of Lights, celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world. Diwali will become a public school holiday in NYC in 2023. The name is derived from the Sanskrit term dipavali, meaning “row of lights.” The festival symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and encourages people to work together and honor mother nature.

Lots of excitement coming up at LaG this week:

  • School Spirit Shopping Day - Thursday, October 27th
  • Fiorello Friday will present "Latinos Unidos" with poetry, singing and dance - October 28th
  • Show Choir will perform as part of the New York Philharmonic opening activities for the David Geffen Hall - October 30th

See the Don't Forget section for more details.

A reminder to all Music Studio families that our online store is currently closed. We just learned that the system accepted some orders, so if you have placed any orders please reach out to music@laguardiahspa.org or instrumental@laguardiahspa.org so we can help in figuring things out.  We have just done inventory and hope to open the online store officially soon!

All students should have received an email from Dr. Stricklin about LaG's costume guidelines for Halloween next Monday. It is a tradition at LaG (for students and faculty) to dress up so make sure your students follow the rules and have a great day! Third announcement here: https://www.laguardiahs.org/feed

Visit from a Jazz Legend

Ron Carter, renowned jazz double bassist visited Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, as part of his new PBS documentary, Ron Carter: Finding the Right Notes.  Click here to see the section just at LaG, or here to see the whole documentary.

LaG is also alma mater to his two sons, which he shared with the students attending the session, along with insights from his life and music career. Ron details how confronting racial injustices early in his career shaped his musical legacy.

Carter's appearances on 2,221 recording sessions make him the most-recorded jazz bassist in history and he has won three Grammy awards, and is also a cellist who has recorded numerous times on that instrument.

Viola da Gamba

More students are needed for the Viola da Gamba ensemble!  This opportunity is open to both vocal and instrumental music students. Patricia Ann Neely, an expert in early music and Viola da Gamba, will host weekly group lessons. The sessions will take place at LaGuardia on Mondays from 4:15-5:30 pm (room 205). The session is on hold this week due to low participation, but hopefully, with a few more students, the sessions can continue!  Please reach out to Instrumental Co-Rep Monique Johnson at educatingmcl@gmail.com to learn more.

Show your Appreciation

Welcome to the 2022-23 school year!

As many of you know, contributions to the Music Studio help pay for a variety of events - the senior class celebration and Accepted Students Open House - as well as the accompanist for chorus classes, additional live-streaming of Music performances, and other concert expenses. If families contributed $100 (or more!!) for every student, we could help the Music Studio pay for so many of these expenses.  Since LaGuardia is a 501(c)(3) organization, your donation is tax-deductible.

You can make a one-time donation or set up a recurring monthly donation - whichever works better for you - to the Music Studio (and the PA) through PayPal. To do so, click the Direct Donation link below or follow these instructions:

Log into your MTK account, click on Ways to Give under the Donate & Volunteer drop-down menu, then on the underlined red link Donate to a specific studio (2 places on the page allow you to do that). The PayPal page that appears is auto-filled to make a donation to the General PA, but you can designate the Music Studio by clicking on the drop-down menu. Below that box is the option to make your donation a monthly-recurring one. Or, by leaving that box unchecked, the donation will be a one-time donation.

You can select any amount you like to donate. Contributions are very much needed, and all are gratefully received!

Click Direct Donation to give to the LaGuardia PA.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Volunteering is a great way to meet people and learn more about Music Studio affairs. Become a volunteer today to support our students and staff all year long, not just at performances. Please make sure you have filled out your volunteer questionnaire on your Membership Toolkit profile.
